National RE Syllabus Working Group

We are a group of the most experienced RE Judaism professionals and Jewish classroom teachers of Religious Education in the UK with over a century of combined experience in the profession. We bear the lived experience of the full spectrum of Jewish backgrounds and affiliations.

We welcome the prospect of a National Syllabus in RE.  This could be a real step forward.

The adoption of a national curriculum for RE is also fraught with dangers.  Recently in Berkshire, Jews and Hindus were forced to raise an Equality complaint against a syllabus written by some of the most esteemed RE experts in the UK.

It is crucial that the voices of Judaism RE subject experts from the Jewish community are central to writing the Judaism portion of the new syllabus.  Moreover, the framework of this syllabus must be truly inclusive of ethnoreligions such as Judaism, Hinduism and Sikhi, that are not just worldviews.

In order for us to live safely as Jews in this country, it is vital that people understand us authentically. Misrepresenting our tradition within RE is not just an inconvenience.  This is existential.
